Harry Redknapp on Penalties

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp does not believe his side deserved to lose the Carling Cup final to Manchester United but confesses he feared the worst when the match went to penalties.

Premier League leaders and Fifa Club World Cup holders United – who are also well placed in the UEFA Champions League and FA Cup – remain on course for a dazzling clean sweep of trophies this season following their tense 4-1 penalty shoot-out victory at Wembley on Sunday.

But Redknapp feels that his players, who are battling relegation in the league, deserved more at the home of English football after battling United all the way in a goalless 120 minutes.

Jamie O’Hara saw his spot-kick saved by United goalkeeper Ben Foster and David Bentley missed the target as Tottenham lost, and while Redknapp feels his side performed with aplomb, the White Hart Lane manager admits he was not expecting to succeed in the shoot-out.

“I thought we were terrific. It was a great performance. It comes down to a lottery in the end with penalties,” he told Sky Sports.

“I’ve got to be honest, we weren’t that confident with our penalty takers.

“You looked at United and they looked like they had some great, confident penalty takers. That’s how it goes.

“But overall they couldn’t beat us in 90 minutes plus extra-time. We fought them. I thought we didn’t deserve to lose today. I thought we were better.”

Meanwhile, Redknapp expects to be struggling for players in Wednesday’s meeting with relegation rivals Middlesbrough following an arduous weekend outing.

“Injuries, fatigue, cramp, pulled muscles, all sorts. Middlesbrough must be sitting at home enjoying every minute of this.”
